General Information

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)

Q.  Who is eligible to play?

 A.  Girls ages 5-15 as of January 1st of the current season.

Q.  Do you have a boys program and a girls program?

A.  Marlboro Girls softball is only open to girls. Boys can play in the Marlboro Youth Baseball league, for more information go to their website at www.myba.org.

Q.  When does the season begin?

 A.  The season begins in late April and runs through late June including playoffs.

Q.  When do practices begin?

 A.  Practice begins in early April as long as indoor gym time can be arranged.  Each individual coach can arrange his or her own gym time..  Outdoor practice begins as soon as we are cleared to use the fields in the spring usually the first weekend in April.

Q.  When are the games played?

 A.  There is a minimum of 14 games scheduled for each minor league team.  There are 15 games scheduled for  the Major league not including playoffs. Games are played during the week and on Saturdays. Game times during the week are 5:45pm for instructional - minor league and 6:30pm for major league games. On Saturdays game times are 9am, 11am, 1pm or 3pm. Sundays are reserved for makeup games.

Q.  Are there games on Mother’s Day or other holidays?

 A.  There are no games scheduled on Mother’s Day or Memorial Day, but there is a possibility of a
makeup game being scheduled by an individual team.

Q.  Where are the games played?

A.  The Marlborough Girls Softball complex is at Hildreth School on Sawin St.

Q.  When do we have to sign up?

 A.  Registrations go out in the guidebooks in January.  You can also download a form from the website.  It is recommended that you register early to guarantee a spot, as we have had to turn players away in the past years. Just because you were on a team last year does not guarantee you a spot if you do not register before the deadline. Registering early also saves you money on your overall fee.

Q.  How many players are there on each team?

 A.  Each team can have as many as 14 players but we would like to limit each team to 12 players to allow more playing time per player.  Currently there are 9 minor league teams and 7 major league teams. We have 8 junior league teams (7-9) and 4 instructional teams (5-6)

Q.  Can I request that my child play for a specific team or age group?

 A.  Your child will play in the appropriate age level.   In the younger levels 5-9 we try to accommodate requests for girls to be on their friends teams, as they reach minor league and especially major league level we are not able to do this due to the possibility of uneven talent level if we honored all requests.

Q.  What does the registration fee cover?

 A.  The registration fee covers several things.  It covers the cost of the uniform each year. This includes a visor and shirt that is the players to keep after the season is over. They also get a pair of black pants that are expected to last at least 2 seasons. If they outgrow their pants they can be returned for another pair.  Part of the registration fees is also to cover the cost of umpires for each game. A portion goes toward new equipment and for overall operating costs.

Q.  Do I need to purchase equipment?

 A.  Yes, each player will need the following:

•    Softball glove

Cleats are recommended at the minor and major league levels but can be worn at all levels. No metal spikes.

Optional items that can be purchased but are provided by the league for the girls to use during practices and games

•    Bat – must be a softball bat, not baseball and must be  ASA approved and stamped with the ASA logo

•    Helmet – must have face guard and chin strap

Q.  How do I volunteer to help?

 A.  Volunteers are essential to the success of the softball program.  One of the biggest volunteer positions is in the concession stand. We ask that at least one parent of each player work in the concession stand for one game.

At various times throughout the season we need help with field cleanup, selling raffle tickets etc. If you would like to help, no amount of time or effort is too small.  Contact us at  karen@marlborogirlssoftball.com
